Frequently Asked Questions
What can you do with the craft of spinning?
Spinning transforms loose fibers—such as sheep's wool, alpaca, or silk—into a sturdy thread. This thread can then be woven, knitted, or crocheted. Spinning opens up a whole world of creative possibilities: from hand-knitted sweaters and woven fabrics to artistic yarns with unique textures and colors.
How does spinning work and what types are there?
During spinning, fibers are combined into yarn by pulling (drawing out) and twisting (twisting). There are various methods:
Hand spindle : the simplest and oldest technique, ideal for beginners or on the go.
Treadle spinning wheel : foot-driven to produce even yarns.
Electric spinning wheel : works with a motor and allows precise, even spinning without footwork.
In addition, there are special techniques such as spinning in long draw (airier yarns) or in short draw (smooth, strong yarns).
Who invented spinning?
Spinning is one of humanity's oldest crafts and was practiced thousands of years ago. Finds of spindle whorls made of stone, wood, or clay show that plant fibers like flax or animal fibers like wool were processed into yarn as early as the Neolithic period. There is no single "inventor"; different cultures developed and passed on the technique independently of one another.
The spinning wheel came much later: It probably originated in India and the Arab world between the 11th and 13th centuries and spread to Europe via trade routes. This made spinning significantly more efficient and it remained a central craft until the Industrial Revolution. Today, it is enjoying renewed appreciation as a creative hobby and an expression of tradition and mindfulness.
How much does a spinning wheel cost?
The cost of a spinning wheel can vary greatly depending on the model, size, and features. Simple entry-level spinning wheels are available starting at around €250 and are a good starting point. Mid-range models with multiple gear ratios or additional features usually cost several hundred euros. Electric spinning wheels or handmade premium models can cost over a thousand euros. You should also consider accessories such as bobbins, lazy cats, or carding machines, which are often essential for comfortable working.
