Long before the treadle wheel there was the drop spindle. It is the oldest spinning tool in the world — and it works today exactly as it did a thousand years ago. The Kromski Drop Spindle Set brings together three different spindles in one set, giving a complete introduction to hand spinning: light enough for fine wool, heavy enough for coarser fibres, and made in wood quality that stands up to serious interest.

Drop spindles are not a substitute for a spinning wheel — they are a standalone tool with their own distinct technique. Many spinners who have a spinning wheel still spin with a drop spindle: while travelling, waiting, reading. The set is equally suited as a first encounter with spinning and as a portable second tool.

What's in the set

The set contains three drop spindles in European alder — the same wood Kromski uses for its spinning wheels. Each spindle has a different weight and therefore a different best use:

• A light spindle for fine to medium wool and blends
• A medium spindle as an all-rounder for most tops and rovings
• A heavier spindle for coarser wool and thicker yarn

All three are top-whorl — the whorl disc sits at the top, the hook catches the yarn, and the spindle turns long and steadily. This design is particularly good for beginners because it is easy to set spinning and holds the yarn reliably.

Frequently asked questions about the Drop Spindle Set

Do I need to know how to spin already?

No — the set is explicitly designed as a starting point. With a short guide and some washed wool or top (not included), you can begin immediately. We recommend beginners start with the medium spindle: it spins steadily and forgives uneven drafting most easily.

What is the difference between this and the Deluxe Drop Spindle Set?

The Deluxe set includes additional starting material for practising as well as a wider range of spindle weights. If you are not yet sure whether hand spinning is for you, start with this set. If you already know you want to pursue it seriously, go straight to the Deluxe.

Can I spin all fibre types with these spindles?

Wool, alpaca, and blends work very well with all three spindles. Very fine fibres such as cashmere or silk need the lightest spindle and some experience. Plant fibres such as cotton or linen are more demanding and are best attempted after some practice with wool.
