What can you do with the craft of spinning?

Spinning turns loose fibres – for example sheep's wool, alpaca or silk – into a stable thread. This can then be woven, knitted or crocheted. Spinning thus opens up a whole world of creative possibilities: from hand-knitted sweaters to woven fabrics to artistic yarns with special textures and colours.

How does spinning work and what types are there?

In spinning, fibres are joined into a yarn by drafting (drawing out) and twisting. There are different methods:

Drop spindle: the simplest and oldest technique, ideal for beginners or on the go.
Treadle wheel: foot-powered, for producing even yarns.
Electric spinning wheel: motor-driven, allowing precise and even spinning without footwork.

There are also special techniques such as long draw spinning (airier yarns) or short draw (smooth, firm yarns).

Spinning is one of the oldest crafts in human history and has been practised for several thousand years.

How much does a spinning wheel cost?

The cost of a spinning wheel can vary greatly depending on the model, size and features. Simple entry-level spinning wheels are available from around 400 euros.
