A spinning wheel that tells its own story
Some spinning wheels just work. Others create an atmosphere in the room. The Kromski Polonaise belongs to the second category. Its design draws on the spinning wheels historically crafted in the Baltic regions of Poland and the Scandinavian peninsula — large, sturdy wheels passed down through generations.
The Polonaise is the largest single-treadle spinning wheel from Kromski. With a 60 cm drive wheel running on pin-and-bushing bearings, the treadle feels so light that your hands can give their full attention to the yarn.
What makes the Polonaise special
The 24-inch (60 cm) drive wheel is more than aesthetics. The pin-and-bushing bearings provide an almost frictionless spin. The whorl ratios of 8, 12, 16 and 20:1 cover a wide range — from slowly building a thick Lopi yarn to spinning fine laceweight.
The wooden adjustment and tension screws can be calibrated so precisely that you can align the wheel angle and flyer position exactly to your posture. The Polonaise can be run in double drive or as single drive with Scotch Tension.
The wood: alder from sustainable forestry
Kromski crafts the Polonaise from sustainably grown alder from a local forest, no more than 50 kilometres from the workshop. In the Walnut and Mahogany finishes you get a deeply pigmented surface; Lacquered is protectively treated and light; Unfinished can be treated to your own taste.

Frequently asked questions about the Kromski Polonaise
Is the Polonaise suitable for beginners?
The Polonaise is a fully featured spinning wheel for all experience levels — but it really shines once you've done a bit of spinning and know what you value in a wheel. Complete beginners can absolutely learn on it; we'd recommend starting with an introductory conversation with us. Alternatively, the Fantasia or Prelude is often a gentler entry point.
What is the difference between the Polonaise and the Symphony?
Both have a 60 cm drive wheel, but the Symphony is a classic saxony wheel with an angled bench and double treadle, whereas the Polonaise has an upright, compact frame with a single treadle and Nordic styling. The Polonaise is narrower and works well in smaller spaces; the Symphony takes up more width and has a different spinning rhythm.
What fibre types can I spin on the Polonaise?
Practically anything: the four whorls (8–20:1) cover the full range from chunky knitting yarns (bulky, Lopi-style) to fine laceweight. For very bulky art yarns or corespun projects, the optional Jumbo Flyer Set is recommended. Wool, silk, cotton, linen, plant fibres — the wheel handles it all.
Can I switch between double drive and Scotch Tension?
Yes, without tools and in under a minute. You simply re-route the drive cord accordingly. Double drive gives more twist per treadle; Scotch Tension (single drive) responds more sensitively to uptake — many spinners switch depending on the yarn and mood.
What spare parts and accessories are available?
The Polonaise ecosystem is extensive: additional bobbins, whorls in different speeds (Standard Slow, Standard Fast, Extra Fast, Jumbo), a Jumbo Flyer Set, poly and hemp drive bands, brake band set and more. Everything is in the Spinning Wheel Accessories section.
How do I care for the wood?
The unfinished version can be treated with wood oil (e.g. linseed oil) or wax. The lacquered, walnut and mahogany versions need very little care — a dry cloth is enough. All bearings should occasionally receive a drop of the included spinning oil; the flyer shaft and spindle bearings are the key points.
Is there a warranty?
Yes — Kromski provides a 5-year manufacturer's warranty on the spinning wheel. For any questions or faults, we are your direct contact and will handle everything with Kromski.
