The right oil for spinning wheel bearings

Not every oil is suitable for spinning wheels. Cooking oils go rancid and leave residues. Machine oils can attack wood or be too viscous for the small bearings of a spinning wheel. Kromski Spinning Oil is a thin, acid-free lubricant developed specifically for the metal bearings and sliding points of wooden spinning wheels — it creeps into tight gaps, remains effective there, and leaves no sticky film.

One bottle lasts for many years of regular use: a single drop per lubrication point is enough. Anyone with a Kromski wheel already receives a small bottle of spinning oil with the wheel — this is the refill when the first bottle is empty, or a first supply for older wheels without oil.

Where does the oil go?

• Flyer shaft (the thin metal surface on which the flyer runs) — one drop each left and right
• Spindle bearings (where the spindle sits in the maidens) — one drop per bearing
• Cord holes in the maidens (where the drive cord passes through) — one drop if the cord squeaks
• Treadle pins and connecting rods — if the treadle creaks

Frequently asked questions about the Spinning Oil

How often do I need to oil?

After each longer spinning session (2+ hours), check whether the flyer shaft is running dry — squeaking or stiff running is the clearest sign. Many spinners oil once a week with regular use, others less often. Better too little than too much — over-lubrication attracts dust and fibres.

Can I use ordinary sewing machine oil instead?

Sewing machine oil works as an emergency solution but is not ideal: it is often somewhat more viscous and formulated for textile contact, not for wooden spinning wheel bearings. The Kromski spinning oil is matched to the bearing diameters and sliding speeds of wooden spinning wheels and remains effective longer. For regular care, the dedicated lubricant is worth it.

Is the oil also suitable for other spinning wheel brands?

The spinning oil can in principle be used for all wooden spinning wheels with metal bearings — the chemical composition is generally suitable for this application. It is not limited to Kromski wheels.
