Frequently Asked Questions

Which hand spindle is right for me?

Checklist for buying a hand spindle

Size and weight of the spindle
Light spindles (20-30 g) are particularly well-suited for fine yarns, while heavier spindles (over 50 g) allow for easier threading of thicker yarns. For beginners, a medium weight of approximately 30-40 g is recommended, as this allows for balanced work.

Type of spindle (Top Whorl or Bottom Whorl)
Top-whorl spindles have the whorl at the top, making piecing easier and ideal for beginners. Bottom-whorl spindles have the whorl at the bottom, run very stably, and are popular for consistent, longer spinning. Both versions are tried-and-true classics—the choice is often a matter of taste.

Material of the spindle
Most spindles are made of wood, which feels warm to the touch and is durable. There are also models with whorls made of clay, acrylic, or metal. While wooden spindles are more classic and versatile, acrylic spindles score points for their transparency and modern appearance. Hand-turned spindles also offer a unique feel.

Beginner-friendliness
If you are just starting out with spinning, you should look for a spindle that is easy to handle: a well-balanced whorl, a stable hook and a comfortable weight.

budget
Hand spindles are generally very affordable. Simple models start at around €10-20. For hand-turned or decorative versions, budget €30-60. This makes a hand spindle ideal for trying out spinning.

Expandability and accessories
While the spindle itself is ready for use right out of the box, additional accessories such as a spinning bowl (especially for supported spindles) or spare hooks can be useful. A transport bag also protects the spindle from damage.

Mobility and storage
A hand spindle is small, lightweight, and fits easily into any pocket. It's perfect for spinning on the go or spontaneously producing small batches of yarn. Those who value flexibility will find the hand spindle the ideal tool.
